gray cardigan, leopard flats

Leopard flats are the perfect exclamation point to this outfit. I love this inspiration photo and couldn't wait to recreate it. No matter how many times I try on these cute shoes in my room though (they're new), I can't convince myself that they are comfortable. I can't pinpoint one thing in particular about them that is uncomfortable, other than the fact that they are utterly and completely flat. I tend to do better with "almost" flats - like the examples below. Anything with a slight wedge or a sneaker bottom with some support are infinitely more comfortable for me. What kinds of flats do you wear for walk-all-day comfort?

It's such an honor to present the "Jeanette" tee to you today! I've shared my friend Katie's company Elegantees with you in the past, and today I'm sharing a shirt we collaborated on (and that's also named after me!). Elegantees is a clothing brand with a cause: through fashion and retail they provide sewing work, and a positive source of income to sex trafficking victims. The clothes (mostly elegant tees) are super soft and comfy, but bring the style up a notch with details like the pocket and roll sleeves I'm wearing. Each item is individually sewn by a survivor of sex trafficking, either in NYC or Nepal, and sewers are well compensated. They offer regular and plus sizes, and everything is under $50.

Whether you're looking for a socially conscious holiday gift, or just a unique t-shirt for weekends, Elegantees has some great options! I'm wearing the size XS and would size up to the S to achieve more of the relaxed fit. Which outfit with the "Jeanette" tee is your favorite?

Black and gold holiday outfit

Today's post is an outfit idea for a holiday party: wearing a blazer and skinny pants instead of a dress. I put together one example from my closet, but there are so many different ways you could wear it. My sequin top and shoes with metal details adds to the festive feel, and there are more examples of tops that could work in an outfit like this below (you could even try the ivory ones with an ivory suit). Would you ever wear a blazer and pants for a holiday look?

Cobalt blazer, pink top, houndstooth skirtCobalt blazer with houndstooth skirt

It was instant love when I saw this trio of colors in the latest Stella & Dot catalog. I knew I had similar pieces already in my closet and from there it was just a matter of deciding what to wear on the bottom half. After holding up a bunch of different options I landed on this houndstooth skirt, which adds an element of whimsy and could work with black tights and booties for colder weather. How would you style the bottom half for this catalog look?

Sometimes, I like to use my clothing budget to buy things I've never tried before, while other times I like to buy things that are tried and true. I've worn a lace top + distressed jeans many times before, but I just couldn't pass up this pink lace top when I was shopping in NYC last weekend (it was my one and only purchase). I was armed with a 50% off friends and family coupon and I'm a sucker for anything baby pink. I can see wearing it lots of different ways - tucked into a skirt, white shorts in the summer, or black jeans and boots this winter. Check out even more lace tops to love under $60 below!

I've been on the hunt for sweater dresses lately! Since I really started to like leggings this year, I've needed something long enough to wear over them, and I've found my closet lacking. Sweater dresses became my focus to fill that gap, which is why I totally jumped at the chance to pick out a couple sweater dresses from ASOS. The turtleneck is my favorite. It's a total steal at $37 and it's super cozy and warm. The purple one is an exaggerated v-neck sweater, and the color is what drew me to it. It's the perfect match under this colorful tribal sweater from 2 years ago.

I'm a big fan of mustard, black and turquoise together. And anything remotely 70's. This inspiration photo is the perfect mix of colors, but my version may be just a little too much of a harsh contrast between the black and yellow. I could do more of a subdued cardigan and necklace, or I could tone down the black to another neutral color. I have a feeling I'll be revisiting this idea to try more combinations soon!

Life in NYC could not be more different than my life in suburban Florida: riding the subway, surrounded by concrete, miles of walking everyday, and it's at least 30 degrees colder this time of year. I'm not used to putting looks like these together and for the most part I walk around NYC feeling like I have "tourist" stamped on my forehead (a street style/trend hunter asked to take some photos of this outfit which helped me feel a little less touristy). What I definitely had going for me was comfort. I walked more than 20 miles in these boots during my stay and they were awesome. This coat is incredibly warm, as are my trusty cashmere-lined gloves. That day I had a work lunch, a little sightseeing, and dinner at Dos Caminos. Tomorrow I'll share another NYC outfit, and later this week I'll share a budget update including details on many of the items I'm wearing today!

Cowl neck sweater, olive jacket, distressed jeansH&M camel poncho sweaterASOS anorak with cowl neck sweater and distressed jeansH&M poncho with Sperrys

I wore this outfit in NYC for a casual sightseeing day. Our first stop was MoMa to see Van Gogh's The Starry Night in person (I was so excited - see my pic on Instagram) as well as a wide range of popular works by Dali, Picasso and Warhol (to name a few). The rest of the day included shopping, a stop at Rockefeller to see the tree, and a walk through Times Square. My Sperrys got pretty dirty but they were really comfortable for walking all day, and the grey athletic socks I added for extra warmth were just the ticket. This jacket is somewhat lightweight, but layering the two sweaters kept me plenty warm, especially with the big cowl neck on the poncho. I've always loved poncho sweaters like these and have a few from years past, so I felt like this one would make a great addition to my closet. It's now sold out online, so check out more under $100 options below if you like this style!

J.Crew front pocket jeans with white button frontSource: My Daily

Source: My Daily

These J.Crew jeans first made an appearance on the blog here. While I'm loving the front view (my goal to re-create this Elle McPherson look was finally realized, plus does anyone remember this Gwyneth moment from 2002?!), the pockets on my back side were all sorts of wrong so I very sadly took them back. Over time, I've realized that back pockets look best on me when they sit low and are wider versus being small and placed higher up. There are lots of brands I've tried on that just don't look right, and I try to use that knowledge to save time when trying things on. What types of back pockets work best for you?

Also - I love this time of year and how many holiday outfits are in stores right now. The window display at White House Black Market caught my eye the other day and I couldn't wait to try these on. The red is cute but not the best shade for my complexion. This black skirt is SO fun (it's huge!) and also comes in red. The silver dress is probably my favorite, it's got sort of a shimmery tweed quality in person. And I love the stud design on the last one. I'll be sharing LOTS more holiday outfit ideas in the coming weeks!

How To Pack For a Cruise

$

SOURCE

SOURCE

I had so much fun sharing a diary of what I wore and what we did on our recent 8-day Carnival cruise (posts here: 1, 2, 3, 4).  Today I’m capping off that experience with a full breakdown of what I packed. If you’ve ever wondered how to pack for a cruise, you’ve come to the right place!

Cruise outfits: swim

The first category: swim wear. If your cruise is in a tropical location, I would start here. I threw 6 swimsuits and 6 cover-ups in my suitcase. I wound up wearing 5 of those swimsuits and 4 cover-ups, pictured. You can also pack less and wash and re-wear items. (Bring travel size detergent, wash in your sink, and hang up on the drying rack located in your shower.)

Your checklist:

-       Swim cover-ups
-       Flip flops
-       Swimsuits
-       Sun hats
-       Sunglasses
-       Beach bag
-       SPF

Note: no need to bring beach towels, the cruise ship provides those for you!

Cruise dinner outfits

The next category: dinner outfits. This is a compilation of everything I wore to dinner. I didn’t pack any extra outfits – this was everything in my suitcase. Since I drove to the port, I was liberal with how many pairs of heels I packed (5). If you're traveling by plane, I would narrow down your dinner shoes to save space.

Your checklist:

-       Two outfits for formal night. //  My outfits for formal night are the two in the far left column. I would sum up formal night dress code (aka “cruise elegant”) as cocktail attire. Some people will wear tuxedos and evening gowns (akin to ‘black tie”) but it’s not necessary if you’re not up for it. I would recommend picking something you would feel comfortable wearing to a wedding. For more info, refer to the full Carnival dress code.

-       Outfits for the remaining # of nights. //  Our cruise was 8 nights, so I packed 6 "cruise casual" dinner outfits. I went pretty casual in linen pants and a jumpsuit two of the nights, while the other outfits are dressier, something I'd normally wear for a night out. Items that aren’t allowed in the dining room include gym shorts, flip-flops, bathing suit attire, cut-off jeans, sleeveless shirts for men and baseball hats. Otherwise pretty much anything casual is game. (And to be honest, sometimes people break the rules. I don’t recommend it though!) For more info, refer to the full Carnival dress code.

-       Clutches. //  I carried a “regular” purse onto the ship and didn’t touch it again until we left. Little clutches are perfect to take to dinner, all you need is your room key!

Cruise casual outfits

The last major category: the "in-between" outfits (not swim, but also not fancy). This is what you will wear to travel to and from the ship (#1 and #5 above), outfits you can wear to brunch in the nice dining room (#2 and #4), and in general outfits you can throw on and wear around the ship. You will also want to consider any stops your ship is making that are NOT swim destinations, like San Juan, which is a city tour (#3 above). I repeated the bottom two outfits twice, because I didn't pack enough "in-between" clothes to not repeat.

Your checklist:

- Outfits for traveling to the ship, and home from the ship
- 2-4 outfits you can wear to brunch in the nice dining room, or around the ship
- Outfits for any excursions/stops that are not swim/beach destinations

Cruise gym outfits

The last category in my suitcase: work out gear. Totally optional, but every Carnival ship I’ve been on has a nice onboard gym, and they offer yoga and exercise classes. I brought 4 workout outfits, wore one for a swim cover-up, and the three others to work out (pictured).

Your checklist:

-       Gym shoes
-       Gym clothes
-       Empty water bottle (fill it up on the Lido Deck and take it with you to the gym)

Carnival Splendor - taken aboard Carnival Sunshine

I brought one suitcase on our trip. The only things I didn't wear:

-       Two swim cover-ups
-       One yoga tank
-       One swimsuit
-       Sweatshirt (never got that cold)

What I wished I had packed:

-       2-4 additional “in-between” outfits, including an outfit for sightseeing in San Juan
-       More underwear, because you change so often on a cruise. I didn't run out, but you can never have enough!

More cruise packing tips:

-       Bring an empty bottle to fill up and take off the ship or to the gym. You can also bring cases of bottled water/soda but keep in mind there is no fridge in your room to keep them cold.
-       Snacks like granola bars for when you are off the ship. The only portable snacks on board for the most part are apples and bananas. Also - bring plastic baggies to bring a sandwich off the ship.
-       You are allowed to bring one bottle of wine per person. Pay a small corking fee to enjoy it at dinner, or enjoy it in your room for free.
-       There should be a hair dryer already in your room, but I packed one just in case.
-       HDMI cable if you want to watch movies from your computer in the comfort of your room.
-       Bug spray, swimmer’s ear medicine and/or motion sickness medicine.
-       Reading materials like books and magazines (perfect for days at sea).
-       Laundry detergent to hand-wash in your sink (there's a drying rack in your shower).
-       Umbrella. (Automatic guarantee of nice weather if you bother to carry it!)
-       Camera, to capture all those amazing cruise memories.

Cruising is one of the most stress-free ways to travel and I hope these checklists will make your trip even smoother! What items do you pack for a cruise? Leave your best tips and tricks in the comment section below!

This post was created as part of my collaboration with Carnival. As always, all of the opinions, thoughts, and ideas in this post are my own.

Chambray dress, black leggings, riding bootsOlive military jacket, chambray dress, leggings and bootsChambray dress, faux fur vest, riding boots

This chambray dress is the marriage of two awesome fashion things: chambray and a classic shirtdress. I'm loving it with riding boots but can also see it working with sandals this spring. It can be worn with or without the matching chambray belt (or with a leather belt instead). For additional layers to keep warm, I like it with the olive jacket, and I like the idea of a faux fur vest (however I've never been brave enough to wear this one out of the house, I think it needs to be longer and/or a different color). How would you style a chambray dress?

Pink wool coat, gray button front, black jeans

One idea for wearing pastel pieces in the winter: mix them with darker colors. I like a soft contrast though, which is why I went for these jeans and this top, both which are such a soft black they're almost gray. They look great against the lighter neutrals like taupe and blush pink and create a soft transition that's still seasonally appropriate.

If I could clone this dress I would - I'd make similar ones in bright colors and patterns. I have a lot of sheath dresses in my closet, but this is the only one with sleeves. When I was shopping the other day I looked for sheath dresses with sleeves everywhere, and all I found was: 1. sweater material, 2. no shape (shift dress), 3. or stretchy material. I definitely don't want stretchy, but I still want some (structured) shape to it, and at least a quarter length sleeve (now I just sound picky). I found a few below but they still seem to be tough to find. What are the hardest dress styles to find in your experience?

I'd wear the hat version for outdoor shopping, and the non-hat version for a cozy Thanksgiving dinner. I hope you have a wonderful and safe holiday today! Please tag me or leave links to your Thanksgiving outfits - I'd love to see them!

White Plum printed cardigan, tunic and leggings

Sweater  /  Tunic  /  Leggings

I’m so excited for today’s post! If you’re spending Black Friday from the comfort of your couch like I am, there’s no reason to miss out on all the deal-getting fun! White Plum is offering some amazing deals - 40% off until 12/1 with code EVERYDAY40. Plus, a flash sale on leggings, boot cuffs and tunics today – see the bottom of this post for details. AND we are giving away a $150 gift card to one lucky reader – simply follow the instructions in the Rafflecopter box. Let’s start with a review of some outfits I tried on!

This first outfit is my favorite! (I wore it for Thanksgiving dinner!) These fleece lined leggings are out of this world, and they are on flash sale today for $5.99. So incredibly comfortable and warm – I’ve never seen leggings like these before. They are thick, not at all sheer and you’ll be tempted to never take them off because they are so comfortable. This tunic comes in a bunch of colors and is perfect to wear over these leggings (it’s dress length on me, so it covers everything it needs to). And this sweater– I'm totally in love with this pattern!

Camel sweater, White Plum red tunic and plaid leggings

Tunic /  Leggings

Next up we have one of White Plum’s signature items, the printed legging. This pair is not fleece-lined, however they are not at all sheer, and it's such a fun print. I love the cranberry color of the top I’m wearing, and it’s not super long on me (I’m 5’7”), so it would also work with jeans. I layered a long sweater to make it work with leggings - and it's on flash sale today for $9.99!

White Plum tribal cardigan, white tunic and navy leggings

Sweater   /  Tunic  /  Leggings

These printed sweaters slay me – I could wear one everyday! I love the bright coral and blue colors on this one. I’m wearing it with the same long tunic in the white color, plus the same fleece-lined leggings in navy. It's so comfortable, I could never take this outfit off.

White Plum black tunic and houndstooth leggings

Tunic  /  Leggings

How fun are these houndstooth leggings? They look great paired with this long black tunic, and I don’t own tall black boots, but they would work well together. Houndstooth leggings are a great alternative to houndstooth pants or a skirt for casual days when comfort is your top priority. You get that same great print, in a style that’s perfect for travel and cozy winter days.

White Plum reindeer leggings

Leggings

Last but not least, check out these reindeer print leggings! I can’t think of a better way to top off an adorable “ugly Christmas sweater” outfit, and the way I’ve styled them here they can be worn for any casual day of the week.

Realistic clothing budget

Here's everything I've purchased with my clothing budget since my last budget post in September!

1. Maison Jules/Macy's, $10 - I wear v-neck t-shirts more than anything so whenever I see one I really like for a good price, I snap it up. Ordered online with a promo.
2. Forever 21, $18 - I bought this top because I loved the fall colors, but after one wash it seems to have completely changed shape (not cool!), so I can't recommend buying it.
3. J. Crew Factory, $44 - I fell for this sweater because of the zipper details and colors. Purchased in store on promo.
4. J.Crew Factory, $35 - My current navy pencil skirt is 7 years old and still one of my favorite work staples, so I was excited to add this wool version with zippers to my closet. Purchased in store with #3.
5. Macy's, $24 - I ordered this online with #1, and absolutely love it. I wore it with sneakers and bare legs in warm weather and boots and leggings for cold weather.
6. J.Crew Factory, $83 - This is a staple piece I had on my wish list for a long time. I talked about my decision to purchase a staple piece from an outlet store (which is not the same quality as the regular store) in this post. Ordered online with a coupon.
7. Sperry, $45 - Flat/comfy shoes have also been on my wish list for awhile, and the next two items satisfied that category - comfy and adorable! I purchased both during Macy's 25% off promo in the store.
8. Steve Madden, $60

Total = $319

These next items were all purchased on the same day (except #8-9), and for one very specific reason: my trip to NYC! I re-scheduled my trip twice during my two-month long illness, so by the time it rolled around, it was WAY colder than when I originally planned to go. Four days before my trip, I hit the mall with a very long wish list. On one hand, this is what a clothing budget is for - I was incredibly thankful to have money already set aside for the cold-weather clothes I needed for the trip. On the other hand, shopping on a tight deadline will result spending way more than you normally would, and that was definitely the case on some of the pricier items! (It's one of my #1 shopping tips: a time crunch will often result in spending more than you want, so plan ahead!)

1. Banana Republic, $28 - Every sweater I own is regular length, and I really wanted a tunic length for NYC. It's one of those basics I'll have and love forever. Purchased in store on clearance and with a $10 Gap Reward.
2. H&M, $30 (sold out) - This was my other sweater purchase for NYC. I knew the cowl neck would keep me warm, and the short sleeves would fit under a coat. Purchased in store.
3. Banana Republic, $23 - I was craving plaid to wear on my trip! Purchased in store on promo and with a $10 Gap Reward.
4. Michael Kors/Macy's, $225 - I can't tell you how many times I've said "I can't wear riding boots, they don't fit my calves (the boots are always too big)." I really wanted tall boots for my trip though, and these were 30% at Macy's because they were the last pair, so I reluctantly tried them on. They are a size smaller than what I normally wear but they fit perfectly - including the calves, woo hoo! I couldn't believe my luck, but they were about $75 more than I wanted to spend. I'm really thankful I bit the bullet because not only did I walk at least 20 miles in them in NYC, but I've also worn them a ton here in Orlando.
5. American Eagle, $37 - I already have jeans in my closet but during my illness I gained weight and couldn't fit into most of them! So both of these pairs were my "emergency" jeans for NYC. (Up until that point I had just been wearing dresses here in Orlando, but I wanted jeans for the colder weather.) I went to AE for their affordability and sizing - I didn't want to commit to an expensive pair, and I'm in between sizes at AE and always size up, so I knew I had a shot of them fitting once I lost the weight (they do!). I wound up really liking both pairs so much I think I would've bought them regardless of the "emergency."
6. American Eagle, $37
7. Michael Kors, $111 - Carrying a heavy purse gives me serious shoulder pain and with all the walking I knew I'd be doing, I didn't want to leave the mall until I had a lightweight bag. I cringed at spending that much (and totally did not mean to "match" my boots - whoops!), but I got 25% off during a Macy's in-store promo, and I'm wearing it a lot here in Orlando, too.
8. Banana Republic, $35 - I bought this while I was in NYC and I love it! My top is the light pink color and I bought it during a 50% off promo in the store.
9. Banana Republic, $30 - This is a recent purchase! I don't have any silver sequins in my closet yet, and it's perfect for the holidays. Purchased during a promo in the store.

Total = $556

My clothing budget is $250 per month. I treat it like an allowance and at the start of each month I deposit $250 into an "account" and then spend as I go. (The $88 is from this cruise shopping post in October.) For more info, see "How to Set a Clothing Budget."
